LVP vs. LVT: Why the Distinction Matters

If you've been shopping for new floors in the Sanford, Orlando, or Kissimmee area, you've almost certainly encountered the terms LVP and LVT. Both belong to the luxury vinyl flooring family and share similar waterproof, durable qualities — but they're designed for different applications, and choosing the wrong one can affect both the look and performance of your floor.

What Is LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank)?

LVP is a long, rectangular flooring plank specifically designed to mimic the look of hardwood. The planks are typically 4–7 inches wide and 36–60 inches long, featuring high-definition printed wood grain patterns and textured embossing that creates a remarkably realistic wood appearance.

LVP is ideal for:

  • Living rooms and family rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Hallways and open-concept areas
  • Anywhere you want the warmth of hardwood without the moisture risk

What Is LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile)?

LVT comes in square or rectangular tiles designed to replicate the look of natural stone, ceramic, or porcelain tile. The tiles are typically 12"×12" to 18"×18", though larger format options exist. The surface textures mimic travertine, marble, slate, or concrete.

LVT is ideal for:

  • Kitchens and dining areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Laundry rooms
  • Commercial spaces and retail floors

Key Differences at a Glance

  • Shape: LVP = planks (wood look) · LVT = squares/tiles (stone look)
  • Aesthetic: LVP mimics wood grain · LVT mimics stone or ceramic
  • Grout lines: LVP = no grout · LVT = optional grout for realism
  • Comfort: LVP generally feels warmer and softer underfoot
  • Waterproof: Both are 100% waterproof
  • Durability: Both offer 20–25+ year lifespan with proper care
  • Cost: Generally comparable — $4–$8 per sq ft installed for both

Which Performs Better in Florida?

Both LVP and LVT are excellent choices for Florida's climate. The real question is aesthetic: do you want the warmth of wood or the clean look of tile?

In our experience installing floors across Central Florida, here's what most homeowners choose:

  • Bedrooms, living rooms, hallways: LVP (wood look is preferred for comfort)
  • Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry: LVT (tile look complements these functional spaces)
  • Open-plan homes: Some clients mix — LVP in living areas, LVT in kitchen, creating a natural visual boundary

What About SPC and WPC?

You may also see "SPC" (Stone Polymer Composite) and "WPC" (Wood Polymer Composite). These refer to the core material, not the surface design. Both LVP and LVT can be manufactured with either core type. SPC is denser and more rigid; WPC is slightly softer and quieter underfoot. For Florida's concrete slab construction, we generally recommend SPC-core products for their dimensional stability.
